Costa Rica Coconuts!

Since relocating to Sunny Costa Rica, I have drooled over pineapples and mangos and bananas, and gotten crazy about how eggs and chicken taste when they are really free range. Honey, cinnamon and turmeric have become part of my daily life…

costa rican coconuts

But recently I have gone nuts over coconuts!

It started with chocolate chip cookies made with coconut oil. And a lesson from the baker about how good coconut oil was for me, compared to similar products. But it was the taste that sold me. Moist, gooey, melt in your mouth delicious, the best chocolate chip cookies EVER!

Coconut oil

The oil and water of the coconut in Costa rica

But now I have new addiction and blessedly its one that is good for. Coconut water! Rather than restate all the many health benefits of coconut water and I am going to give you a link to a recent article on www.welovecostarica.com . It explores the authors introduction to this liquid gold and discusses many of its fine attributes.

 http://http://www.welovecostarica.com/public/The-Power-of-Pipa-Fria-What-in-the-world-is-this.cfm

While coconut water can be expensive to buy in the USA, its cheap here in Costa Rica. And in the US, they often feel the need to add sugar or fructose. As a matter of fact, if you start drinking coconut water regularly, the price difference alone could pay for your move to Costa Rica!

ZING! Costa Rican Coconut water

If you are not convinced yet….here is an article on knowledge base about the amazing power of coconut water…

http://http://www.knowledgebase-script.com/demo/article-320.html

I know that many people have gotten themselves into the mind set of food as medicine and eat healthy for that reason. But I am so glad that here in Costa Rica, I can eat delicious food that is so good for me without too much conscious effort…its cheap, available and oh so good!

Costa Rican Cultural Events

Lest you think that Costa Rica is all beaches and mountains, the city of San Jose, which will be the last stop on our January tour, is full of opportunities to enrich oneself. Since relocating to Sunny Costa Rica, discovering all of them has been a joy!

Teatro Nacional

Costa Rica National Theater

First of all there is the wide array of museums, from the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum, the Jade Museum, the National History Museum and numerous smaller art museums.

Costa Rica Beachfront Hotels

Costa Rica has GORGEOUS beaches…golden sand, black sand, white sand, grey sand and even one of the only pink sand beaches in the world! But since relocating to Costa Rica I have found that in researching Hotels on the Beach, it is important to not just see the pictures but to read the fine print. Many hotels have a BEACH VIEW and will take you to the beach by shuttle or golf cart….which is fine…but not the same thing as walking out to the beach whenever you want!

So here are some of my favorite beaches  in Costa Rica.

Samara Beach….has the beach at its front and the jungle at its back.

Farewell to expoture 2012

Native DAncers bid us farewell

Native Dancer at Expotur
Cost Rica, Native Dancer Welcoming Us to Expotur 2012

Expotur
Another day  and more fun learning about all the GREAT hotels, spas and adventure in Costa Rica!
Can you believe this is my JOB?!?!?!

But even more important, I learned, or rather re-learned, the most important lesson of Marketing 101.

PEOPLE DO BUSINESS WITH FUN PEOPLE!

If you are not fun or interesting, you had better hire someone who is.We started out very organized. We went through the book of vendors and picked out our likely candidates and set up appointments with them. We had a check list of questions and requirements. By day two, we were stopping at the booths with the best food (like free pina coladas). But in the end we were planning to do business with the people who were the most fun!

This handsome guy below is Giovanni Graziano, General and Sales Manager of the recently renovated Balmoral Hotel in downtown San Jose, Costa Rica. This hotel was not on our list to see, but Giovanni nabbed me in the hallway and asked me to stop by his booth. If you come on one of our tours, you will be seeing more of Giovanni! (Yes, I know he is NOT Costa Rican, he is another expat like me who fell in love with Costa Rica…but you have to love that Italian accent!)

Giovanni Graziano

Giovanni Graziano, Gen Mgr, Balmoral Hotel

Another FUN place we learned about…represented by more fun people, including was a charming hotel in Monteverde, Costa Rica. They support local musicians and not only have live music every night in their lounge, but actually have concerts after hikes. They are truly unique in their support of and love for the preservation of local Costa Rican music. And I cannot imagine anyone more fun to work with!!!! They are truly engaged with what they do and it shows.

We also checked out transportation companies and of course we were looking for the usual things…but we also found a company with wifi on the bus, bathrooms, gps, air conditioning, and they had a sample of their seats there for us to try! We were most impressed with the company that had anticipated our problems and had solutions for them…(marketers…pay attention).

So, if YOU want to tempt people…have a great product with a unique twist that you are passionate about, serve chocolate, and be fun! That’s where all our business went this week!

I had a passionately good time….learning more about Costa Rica than I would have thought possible in such a short time!

I learned about the great Chocolate Tour at Tirimbina, where the emphasis is on conservation, education and just recently they have added a lodge and restuarant. They gave me a chocolate and ginger bar made on their grounds. HMMMM.
And I learned about a variety of kinds of tours that clients can take….all of which you will be hearing more about!!!

San Jose, Costa Rica…Tourism Expo

Since retiring and relocating to Sunny Costa Rica, I have been astounded to learn about Costa Rica! It has so much to offer. And over the next 3 days I will be priveleged to attend one of the larger tourism expos that the country has….

This is an excerpt from the Gringo Central Website and includes the links with all the information about the EXPO.

“Expotur 2012 will focus on Costa Rica as a business convention destination

From May 9th to the 11th, the 2012 Tourism Expo (Expotur) will attract more than 300 representatives of the burgeoning tourism industry in Costa Rica and the region. This year’s focus will not be so much on ecotourism, something that has been a prominent theme in previous expos. The tourism industry will dedicate this year’s Expotur to advancing Costa Rica as a paradise for business meetings and conventions.

Here’s the news link to information about the Expotur:

http://news.co.cr/expotur-2012-will-focus-on-costa-rica-as-a-business-convention-destination/4600/

Here’s the link to the Expotur website in English:  http://www.expotur.com/index_en.php

Venue location:  http://www.ramadaherradura.com/location/

So tomorrow morning bright and early, one of my business partners and I will get on the bus in San Ramon, and go to San Jose for the day. We are so excited to see some of the people we already know in the industry and to also check out some of the newer beach properties for our next tour.

Most people who eventually relocate or retire to Costa Rica, start by taking a tour. It’s the smart way to see a number of different parts of the country…to check out big cities, small cities, mountain communities and ocean living….and see what intrigues you the most. In Costa Rica, you can virtually pick your climate like you would pick a pair of shoes back in the States (and they also have some pretty cute shoes here!). So why NOT   pick out the climate that you like best???? And the view that makes YOUR heart sing?

If this intrigues YOU, check out our contact us page…we would love to hear from you…In English OR Spanish…about one of our upcoming tours.

San Ramon Sunday Morning

Angelina on Sunday in San Ramon

San Ramon Sundays Alarm Clock

I was awakened from a deep sleep this morning by the sound of a cat purring and very fetchingly begging to be scratched behind the ears. As I obliged, I realized that this was the only sound I heard. I have relocated to the busiest street in San Ramon, Costa Rica..and yet even the cars are still sleeping early Sunday.

Even the appliances are quieter in Costa Rica! My refrigerator here does not make those sounds…you know them…that sound like a burglar in the middle of the night. Maybe even the appliances are less stressed.

Largest church inSan Ramon

San Ramon, Costa Rica Sunday

Church attire in Costa Rica

No one is rushing off  yet. But soon, well dressed families and students from the local branch of the University of Costa Rica will start wending their way to one of the local churches. The churches here are standing room only on Sundays. And after church, the local parks will be flooded by people eating ice cream or sitting and talking and observing  the pretty girls all dressed up. During the week, the children wear uniforms to school, so Sundays is their chance to SHINE.

After the visits in the park, a stop at a local bakery before heading home. While retail establishments are closed today, food shops are open.

Many bakeries in osta Rica

Mmmm. the smell of bakeries in Costa Rica

Later today I will be taking some soup to a sick friend. There will be no business meetings, no business calls. Today is for family.

Well, if I see a beautiful home with a for rent or for sale sign, I will probably write down the phone number :)

And call them tomorrow. When San Ramon returns to normal. And so does San Ramon Homes Rent or Buy.

Stressed? Do this!

Are you as stressed as I have been at times? Shoulders tense, eyes burning, headachey?

Close your eyes for a few seconds, just long enough for the image of the computer to fade.

Roll those shoulders a few times.

Take a few deep breaths.

Now…start pondering what YOUR perfect living situation would be.

Would the temperature be mid 70′s to mid 80′s every day but cool down at night? With trade winds to naturally air condition your home?

Would you like to be with in an easy drive of white, grey, black, and beige  beaches?

When you wake up in the morning, do you want to hear birds, feel tropical breezes moving through your curtains and across your body? Do you want to start the day with organic coffee, fresh fruit, organic eggs, home made bread hot from the oven? Perhaps a touch of local honey on that bread..

When you walk to your window  what do you want to see? Lush green mountains, orchids, butterflies, hummingbirds…

Do you want to live a little bit out in the country where you step outside at night and see a million stars in absolute stillness or in the heart of the city where you can walk to everything?

If any of this resonates with you, consider San Ramon, Costa Rica.

We have spotlessly clean 2 bedroom apartments in great locations starting at $300 a month and prices go up from there. Price depends on:

Location, size of rooms, how modern the kitchen and bathroom are, how large the yard is, the view. Ocean views are the most expensive. Large tile baths with both showers and tubs and double sinks will increase the price, especially if there is one in every bedroom, and yes, a number of homes are built this way. Large kitchens with lots of cabinets and granite countertops  will also increase the price but they are available.

I recently saw a property that had a spectacular mountain view, with TWO homes on it for $150,000. You could live in one and rent out the other. One was brand new and the other was just renovated and had a lovely fireplace. Both had 2 bedrooms and 2 baths. The yard was small. It was 8 minutes outside of town, but one minute from a paved road. This type of property should sell quickly, as the owner said he was motivated and would negotiate.

A lot here sells from 20,000 to 300,000…all depending on the size and the view!

So if your dreams are now of Costa Rica, please call 506-500-Sunny   for a rich life in Sunny Costa Rica.

Costa Rica Frugal Retirement….

Or “How to Live in San Samon on less than $10 a Day” and love your life.

Plan A.

1. Lets start with rent. You can rent a fully furnished room with private ceramic bath, two meals a day, Internet, cable, Magic Jack and gym membership for $200 a month. These rooms are within walking distance of everything so you wont need a car or a taxi. They also come with a large walled in patio for contemplating the beauties of San Ramon. They also have a few cats and will feed your cat premium cat food and include Kitty Litter in the rent.

2.Spend $50 a month for a membership in the health insurance program or for private insurance.

3. You now have $2 a day for entertainment. On Wednesdays, first run movies at the Mall are less than that. You can have a coffee and a pastry for less than that. You can take the bus to the beach for the day.

4.Books. Join a local English speakers group and attend their book swaps. Books are free and you get to take home the same number of books as you brought.

Plan B

1. Live where you work. This essentially is a free way to live. And you will find yourself working whenever you feel creative, a real plus.(middle of the night, early morning, etc).

2, Hire a cook. I did this yesterday. She lives next door and used to own a restuarant. For $3 a day she brings me a LARGE plate of food (enough for lunch and dinner), heavily leaning towards fruit and vegetables, all home made of course and delicious.

Plan C

1. Move in with friends. Depending on the number of friends and the lavishness of the house, this could be anywhere from $50 a month on up.

2. Divide the household chores and cooking chores and costs. Cooking costs are less with a group and will probably run you $50 amonth for a group of 4.

3.Share a car. Share the expenses of the car. Again, should run you about $50 a month depending on how much YOU use it.

Hope this gives you an idea of how very inexpensive it can be to live in San Ramon!

Living the Pura Vida in Costa Rica!

Hi again,

This is Sonya’s sister, Deborah, posting again.  Just thought I would add to what my sister already blogged about.  If you couldn’t tell ,I had a fantastic time in San Ramon.  I can hardly wait to go back again!  It truly feels like the land of opportunity in so many ways.  There are challenges, like the language barrier, but what a great way to keep your brain active by learning a new language!  They say the best way to ward off dementia is to keep doing new things every day.  Well, while I was in Costa Rica, I think I did a lot to ward off any memory loss.  So many wonderful things to see and do.  I also slept, ate and relaxed more there than I have in years.  I have serious allergies, which seemed to have vanished while I was there, only to return with a vengeance when I came back to Minnesota.  I have been showing my pictures of San Ramon to my friends and co-workers, it has been fun educating them about Costa Rica and all it has to offer.

Even if you do not have the same need for the adrenaline rush of the zip line, or the Tarzan Swing, Costa Rica is thrilling in so many ways.  (see videos for an eyeful of fun!) I miss my big sister, and all the great friends I made while I was there.  If there were ever a siren’s song to go somewhere, Costa Rica is definitely calling me back!

Hope some of you will join us on the tour in January.  It will be amazing, I promise!!

Sunny Costa Rica…Decision

San RAmon Costa Rica Flowers

San Ramon, Costa Rica Flowers outside my office

Hydrangeas in Costa Rica
Hydrangeas on my way to the bakery

One year ago today I decided to move to Sunny Costa Rica.

I turned to a friend on the couch and said it out loud…I AM MOVING TO COSTA RICA.

He, ever logical, said, perhaps we should visit there first…and we did, within the next 3 weeks.

For me, the hardest part was just to decide.

And my to do list was fairly short.

1.Sell my stuff.

2.Decide what would go in the two suitcases I would take.

3.Tell my friends and family I was going.

Perhaps because I have moved a lot, I did not have as many trepidations as some might have. Also, I had done a lot of research on the Internet about what I was doing. Stories of others who had done the same thing resonated with me.

Also, it didnt feel FINAL like some people were (over) reacting to my decision. If I hated it or it did not work out, I could always move back. Statistically, 1 in 3 people who move to Costa Rica, move somewhere else within 10 years. I suppose they either move back where they came from or on to what they consider greener   pastures.

My attitude every day was   Today will be a great adventure. And Costa Rica has never let me down.

More has been added to my life than I ever dreamed. People, food, Angelina the Cat, well if you read this blog you now what I mean. Yesterday we went to Ricardissimos for his famous fried chicken. While we were eating the chicken, he brought out home made soup. This is not on the menu. It is for special customers only. Full of fresh vegetables, chicken and an incredible broth.I challenge you to go to any 5 star restaurant and order a better tasting soup at any price.

When I have been sad about something my new friends here have hugged me and said “You are not alone”.

Yes, there are things that I miss from the United States. Some make it on to a list for friends and family to bring me from the United States (like bars of Ivory Soap…why do they have every brand here except Ivory???) And whenever I go to the airport I buy Tide at the local Walmart. For most other things, local brands are just as good if not better. The Tide and Ivory thing are probably just deeply ingrained brands from my mother. I know that hanging out laundry that smells like Tide brings back child hood memories.

Other hard to find things make me creative. I check out every used bookstore and used book sale and swap books with other ex pats. Books are gold here.

And some things I find that I just dont really need. Want, need, love, like…when you are truly living in the moment, all you NEED is what you need for that moment.

I try not to dissect happiness too much as I know it can be illusive. I know that I need to feel useful and mentally challenged. Hence the business.

I also know that happiness is not the past nor the future but right now. So my business had better be what I love…the people I work with the people I want to be with…the here and now the best I can make it.

The Costa Rican motto is Pura Vida…the pure life, the good life, the sweet life. Yes.

San Ramon, a new office and a new home

San RAmon, Costa Rica stove

My stove in San Ramon Costa Rica

This could be one the happiest days of my life, certainly since retiring and relocating to Costa Rica.

Today I moved into my new offices for San Ramon Homes Rent or Buy and into an apartment in the back of the offices to live. When I lived in Chicago, I worked and lived from one place and loved it. This is even going to be better! During the rainy season, I can go to work without getting wet!

Friends moved me in…I didn’t have to lift a thing. They hooked up my cable and Internet and hired a plumber to give me a “North American Shower.

SAn ramon shower

I have  a 10 by 10 patio out back to take my morning coffee.

Closets are a rather foreign concept here so I turned an office into a walk in closet. Where did all these clothes come from? I moved down here with only 2 suit cases!

Angelina spent the first night prowling every corner…and now she is curled up sleeping, exhausted from supervising the move.

This is one her favorite new spots…

San Ramon cat

Costa Rica, Angelina favorite spot

I have a laundry room, the aforementioned patio, a bathroom, kitchen, storage room, conference room, and 7 other rooms. It is mostly furnished….all I need to buy is a washer and dryer. I am paying $800 a month and could have gotten by for less, but the location is excellent and it is beautifully decorated. The large conference room is airconditioned.

There is a grocery store and a beauty parlor across the street…I have no excuse to be out of food or for looking tacky. I have also just discovered that you can have nearly anything delivered in San Ramon for less than a $1.00 . This could seriously impair my walking program.

San Ramon…share the wealth

So my sister has returned to Minnesota and I am left to reflect on her visit.

It was fun even beyond what I had imagined to share with her all the little places I love here, and to discover more. We had adventures, we had misadventures. We had sister fun. There are some videos of

Deb at Puntarenas

Deb at the beach in Costa Rica

karaoke from her last night here that will never be shown on the internet.

On the way to the airport, I asked her what she liked best about San Ramon, Costa Rica, as a place to relocate or retire. I thought she would mention all the things I love (warm people, great food,  beautiful weather), but her top pick was that she feels it is the land of opportunity…a great place to start a business. She has had her own business before and she and I are going to be providing tours here for San Ramon Homes Rent or Buy. . She is just delighted with all the options for that.  She said that San Ramon feels like the United States in 1980….open for business.

I am glad she feels that way because it will encourage her to move here. But I also said to her as we approached the airport, “Just in case I did not spell it out, I am really happy here.” And she laughed and said that it was very obvious.

For me wealth has always been about happiness. If money cant buy happiness what good is it? And happiness is about living joyfully in the moment, with good friends, good ideas, good books….oh…and a very soft cat.

San Ramon…do you want to fly????

San Ramon Canopy

My sister ziplining in San Ramon Costa Rica

Lest you think that the relocation coach does nothing but eat her way across Costa Rica, today we went zip lining 45 minutes out of San Ramon.

San Ramon ziplining

Costa Rica,San Ramon Zip Lining

The place we went charges $50 for two people to try 3 different kinds of ziplining (or canopy as they call it here). We tried the standard ziplining, the Tarzan Swing and the Superman. The hiking and ziping took 2 hours and had amazing views. We were at the top of the cloud forests, overlooking the mountains, and a river with a waterfall.

At the same place, you can go horse back riding or sign up for hiking tours to see butterflies, humming birds and monkeys.

Included in the price was lunch. I had the best chicken soup I have had since coming to Costa Rica, including my own home made soups!

This activity will definately be on our next tour!

The place is very safe, and yet exciting and the best way to really see the Costa Rican countryside.

Or so my sister says.

I staid on the ground and held her purse.

San Ramon Costa Rica Dream Retreat

Since relocating and retiring to Sunny Costa Rica, I have dreamed of assisting others in making this wonderful journey. This week my sister and I are busy planning a tour that will allow others to see the wonders of San Ramon, Costa Rica.

The first step we needed to take was WHERE would our tour folks stay? We wanted a place that would show off the best of Costa Rica and San Ramon but still feel like a “vacation” for those who were traveling. We found it today in Villa Blanca, located 20 K. outside of San Ramon, at the top of the cloud forests. The views are amazing. The rooms are actually little houses with terraces that look down from the mountain top.

costa rica casitas

San Ramon, Villa BlancaThe spa is a little casita as well. The food served in the dining room is grown in their own greenhouses. There is a charming chapel on the grounds that has an all tile ceiling. SAn Ramon Costa Rica Chapel Ceiling Villa Blanca

They have a wellness center, yoga classes, waterfalls, meditation areas, and a tilapia pond.

The food in the restaurant was so good…we had to have an appetizer, a main dish and of course a dessert! They do serve a lot of healty home made soups and salads….
